A little bit of...
Did you know that you could travel almost to every part of Spain without moving from Barcelona? That was the purpose of Poble Espanyol, this big open-air exhibition in Montjuic. It was constructed in 1929, when the International Exhibition took place in Barcelona. This exposition brought development and progress to the city, especially to the Montjuic area. It brought to Barcelona not only the Poble Espanyol, but The Magic Fountain, Espanya Square, the Greek Theatre, the Olympic Stadium and the Mies Van der Rohe pavilion (mental note: give all of them a single post, they deserve it).
But, going back to our subject, The Poble Espanyol was the idea of the Catalan modernist architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch (who designed a lot more buildings in the city and surroundings). His idea was to bring together some architecture styles and cultures from around Spain in a single place. The aim was to produce an "ideal model" Spanish village.
It's worth it checking out some of the events that take place there, because nowadays it's used mostly for concerts, theatre, exhibitions and nightlife.
